By far the most common devices we are asked to work on in our El Paso forensics lab are computers. We get home computers, business workstations, servers, and of course laptops. The problems we are asked to solve vary quite a bit. Sometimes we are addressing hardware failures or software issues. In another instance we may be analyzing a computer to extract a history of the user's internet usage. Critical Data Recovery
When we are asked to do troubleshooting on computers, whether they are workstations, notebooks or servers, we always make data preservation and recovery a priority. Depending on the situation, we may remove the hard drive(s) and copy off the critical files or even make a forensic image. Forensic Imaging
The analysis work we do in our El Paso lab often begins with the imaging of a hard drive. Imaging involves making an exact duplicate of a drive, including all unused space. The image can then be verified against the original using a mathematical function called a hash, insuring the image is an exact copy. For some clients that is the end of the job; all they want is the image for backup or internal analysis. For other clients creating the image is the first step in a data recovery or forensic analysis process we perform in our lab.
